Cycling Strategy
Project Summary
In a region where personal car usage prevails, Copenhagenize played a pivotal role in guiding the Cotentin region in reshaping mobility behaviors. This three-part project involved creating a bicycle strategy to structure policy directives, developing a bicycle master plan to map out infrastructure development, and crafting a guide contextualizing best practices on infrastructure design.
Copenhagenize proposals focused on addressing three particular challenges in the rural and suburban contexts of the area: encouraging short to medium distance daily trips through the development of secure cycling infrastructure; developing intermodality between cycling, public transport, and car-sharing options by creating favorable conditions to access multimodal exchange hubs by bicycle; developing appropriate services (long-term bicycle rental, parking) and communication actions to encourage users to travel by bicycle.
Moreover, Copenhagenize also took into account the particularities of the seaside context, where small towns with a strong heritage character and preserved coastal areas are visited by scores of tourists every summer. The cycling strategy focuses on developing favorable conditions for cycling to create a safe, reliable and attractive mobility option for all users during the summer period. Since the Cotentin region also wishes to become a top tourist destination for cyclists, Copenhagenize complemented the bicycle plan with a series of actions aimed to develop and promote cycling tourism around the Eurovelo cycling route that crosses the area.
